Debido a la longitud de la reseña, he tenido que dividirla en dos. Aquí tenéis la primera parte.

The space between de Diana Gabaldón

Parece que la temática del “científico loco” se le quedaba corta a JJ Adams para completar la antología, por que por mucho que quiera este relato no encaja con la idea que inspira la recopilación ya que lo que mueve la historia es la magia y no la ciencia.

El relato en sí me ha parecido lento y previsible.

Harry and Marlowe meet the founder of the Aetherian Revolution de Carrie Vaughn

Una historia steampunk que se ajusta perfectamente a la temática de la antología, corta, sencilla y entretenida.

Blood and stardust de Laird Barron

Este relato, inspirado claramente en Frankenstein, triunfa en la creación de una atmósfera opresiva en la que los detalles de la brutalidad de los personajes pueden pasar desapercibidos en la historia. Este escenario está increíblemente bien descrito, pero el desencadenante del final de la historia parece un poco traído por los pelos. Es una lástima que esa parte no se haya pulido un poco más.

A more perfect union de L.E. Modessit, Jr.

Aplicar la ciencia a las elecciones para obtener los resultados deseados es el sueño de todo político, pero no así de todo ciudadano.

Rocks Fall de Naomi Novik

Una conversación al borde de la muerte entre un superhéroe y un supervillano que da a entender que no todo es blanco y negro. Se queda en poca cosa, creo que podría haber dado más de sí.

We interrupt this broadcast de Mary Robinette Kowal

Ese aire retro de tarjetas perforadas y cálculos matemáticos a mano es lo que hace especial este relato ambientado en la guerra fría. De los mejores de la antología.

The last dignity of man de Marjorie M. Liu

La premisa de esta historia es interesante, en el mundo real existe una multimillonario de la familia Luthor al que su madre nombre Alexander. Como una profecía autocumplida, dedica sus recursos a parecerse a Lex Luthor cuando no es esa su verdadera forma de ser. Creo que la historia pretende tener un mayor calado moral del que yo soy capaz de extraerle, pero no descarto una relectura.

The Pittsburgh Technology de Jeffrey Ford

A Jeffrey Ford lo descubrí gracias al estupendo blog Cuentos para Algernon, y tengo el firme propósito de investigar más su ficción corta. Esta historia, que parte de una premisa tan interesante como la oportunidad de cambiar tu vida mediante el uso de la tecnología y que está muy bien escrita, no llega a acabar de convencerme. Creo que el autor juega a no dejar clara la verdad, pero no llega a rematar el relato.

Mofongo knows de Grady Hendrix

Por alguna extraña razón, los gorilas inteligentes son un recurso bastante utilizado en los superhéroes, especialmente en los del sello DC. En este relato, Grady Hendrix homenajea a estos tebeos de la eda dorada de los tebeos y también a los relatos puros de aventuras como “Las minas del Rey Salomón”. A su vez, es un recordatorio de nuestro paso temporal por este mundo, tengamos las capacidades que tengamos. Por desgracia, la prosa y la historia no están a la altura de las ideas que se pretenden plasmar.

The food’s taster boy de Ben H. Winters

Esta irregular historia pone fin a la antología. Aunque el transfondo pretende inculcarnos la necesidad de seguir teniendo metas para que la vida tenga sentido, la ejecución no me ha gustado, aunque la resolución si.

En general, la antología me ha parecido de menos calidad que otras recopiladas por John Joseph Adams, quizá debido a que la premisa en la que se basaba era demasiado restrictiva y las historias han sido repetitivas o fuera del ámbito de la colección.

Nuevo libro de Iain Banks en 2015

El dieciséis de febrero Iain M. Banks hubiera cumplido 60 años. Para celebrar esta fecha, se ha hecho público que en el año 2015 se va a publicar un libro de poemas de Banks y su gran amigo Ken McLeod, editado por este último.
