HG Wells, secret agent

hgwellscoverAunque ya conocía algo de la obra de Alex Shvartsman, gracias a su divertida Explaining Cthulhu to grandma, la mayoría de las veces que ha estado presente en el blog ha sido debido a su encomiable labor como editor de las antologías UFO (1, 2 y 3).

En este ebook tienen cabida tres relatos cortos y muy entretenidos con HG Wells como protagonista.

“The case of the Weather Machine”

En su primera misión como agente secreto al servicio de Su Majestad, Wells es destinado a Rusia a conseguir información sobre una máquina que controla el tiempo atmosférico. Sin embargo, se verá envuelto en una conspiración para derrocar al zar por parte de un Ulianov, pero no el más conocido de los hermanos.

Me gusta como el autor introduce personajes reales en su mundo fantástico, para darle más trasfondo a la historia. Pero sin duda, lo que me resulta más llamativo es el extremo parecido entre algunas de las imágenes de este relato y El mapa del caos. Supongo que beber de las mismas fuentes da lugar a estas coincidencias.

“The case of the Dirigible Heist”

Con menos fuerza que el relato anterior, en esta ocasión seremos testigos de las peripecias de Wells como agente destinado a París, donde se ha erigido la Torre Eiffel que servirá como potente transmisor para todos los servicios secretos del planeta.

Asistiremos al comienzo del romance entre Pierre Curie y Maria Skłodowska, y también aparecerán ante nosotros todo un desfile de personajes conocidos de la época que jugarán su pequeño papel en esta intriga.

“The case of the Yellow Submarine”

Este último relato mantiene el nivel de los anteriores e incluye una mención a la tercer ley de Clarke muy bien traída, aunque el giro final es bastante previsible.

De hecho, lo más entretenido de esta lectura es ponerse a buscar todos las referencias y juegos que Alex ha dejado plantados en sus páginas. Por si no los pillamos todos, el propio autor los ha incluido en un anexo al que merece la pena echarle un vistazo.

Merece mucho la pena dedicar unos momentos a leer esta historia. Espero que pronto Alex nos traiga más aventuras de Wells, porque sin duda tiene material para rato.

Libro gratis : The penitent damned

the-penitent-damnedSe puede descargar de forma gratuita el libro The penitent damned de Django Wesler, un autor que me llama la atención pero al que todavía no he hincado el diente. Quizá esta sea mi oportunidad.

Aquí os pongo la corta sinopsis:

Alex is a master thief, with dark magic to give her an edge. When she goes up against Duke Orlanko’s Concordat secret police, though, she may have taken on more than she bargained for…

The world of poo

pooSolo alguien como Terry Pratchett podría permitirse escribir un libro sobre excrementos y salir indemne.

De manera similar a como hizo Cat Valente con sus historias sobre Fairyland, Pratchett toma una mención que hace en su novela Snuff, y la expande hasta crear este pequeño cuento para niños.

Supongo que el principal público al que va dirigido son los niños pequeños, que sin duda se reirán a carcajadas con el humor escatológico que emiten todas las páginas del libro, pero yo sinceramente esperaba algo más.

Y es que las referencias a Ankh-Morporck son mínimas, y todo el libro gira alrededor de los distintos tipos de deposiciones que el pequeño protagonista puede llegar a coleccionar.

The world of Poo es poco más que un pasatiempo que se lee en una sentada y que no dejará marca en nosotros.
