Portada de The Labyrinth Index

Ya tenemos aquí la que será portada de la nueva entrega de The Laundry Files de Charles Stross. Tendrá como nombre The Labyrinth Index y ha sido diseñada por Crush Creative y Ellen Rockell. Esta novela va a ser la novena entrega de la serie y trae una sinopsis suculenta:

Summerland

En general me gustan los deportes. No es que sea ninguna experta, pero siempre me ha parecido divertido verlos en alguna retransmisión. Pero reconozco que no consigo cogerle el truco al beisbol. Puede ser que no me lo hayan explicado bien o que no haya tenido continuidad en su visionado, pero  nunca ha conseguido engancharme.

Quizá por esto me sorprenda todavía más la grandísima creación que es Summerland, de Michael Chabon. Se trata de un libro infantil, inextricablemente relacionado con un deporte que no me dice nada y sin embargo me ha conseguido emocionar como si fuera una fanática de los Red Sox. Creo que esta reacción tan inesperada ha tenido lugar por varios motivos y no tengo claro cuál es el más importante, así que los expondré todos aquí.

La prosa de Chabon, ganador del Pulitzer, no es algo que vayamos a descubrir ahora. En Summerland es capaz de adaptarla a una historia infantil, sin perder por ello un ápice de interés. Es muy meritorio conseguir esto, recurriendo al manido viaje del héroe donde va conociendo a los miembros de su variopinta compañía.

En cuanto a estas figuras, tienen mucha más profundidad de la que cabría esperar. Tanto los personajes humanos como los féericos son entrañables y a la vez creíbles, toda vez que aceptamos la existencia de la magia. Una magia que rezuma en cada una de las páginas, con un desfile de criaturas sorprendentes que comparten una pasión común, el deporte del diamante.

Esta magia se basa en varias mitologías, sobre todo la nórdica (los referentes Ragnarok [aunque lo llamen Ragged Rock], a Yggdrasil, a Thor… son constantes) pero también a esos mitos americanos que no son tan conocidos o tan explotados. Están presentes en libros como la trilogía de Marte de Robinson y sobre todo en los libros de Alvin Maker de Card, pero quizá no han tenido tanto tiempo para cuajar en nuestra cultura global.

El viaje que emprenden los niños es uno de descubrimiento, no necesariamente un rito de paso a la vida adulta, pero si un recuerdo que guardarán para siempre. Me encanta esa idea de irse de aventuras, me apasiona el hecho de que en los libros esté la sabiduría necesaria para afrontar los reveses del viaje y el conocimiento que les aportará para su vida futura.

Lo que no he sido capaz de entender son las constantes referencias a jugadores de beisbol famosos o a complicadas normas que influyen en el juego. Me da pena no conocer este deporte porque sin duda hubiera disfrutado aún más de un libro maravilloso que me ha transportado a la infancia.
