Lecturas de ciencia ficción y fantasía
En un interesante post sobre los el relanzamiento de su tetralogía Xenowealth, aparte de hablar sobre el intrincado mundo de los derechos de autor en distintos países (destaco una frase de una editorial, “house policy is only to buy SF if we can get world rights to the struggling sales here. Other than that, it’s Fantasy only.”) podemos echar un vistazo a las portadas de las ediciones electrónicas de sus libros.

Si sois seguidores de Fantástica Ficción, recordaréis que hace unas semanas estaba disponible para su descarga gratuita el libro HWJN de los autores Ibraheem Abbas y Yasser Bahjatt.
Empecé a leer el libro movida por la curiosidad. El autor formaba parte del panel de la LonCon3 de ciencia ficción árabe al que asistimos y contó una anécdota muy curiosa sobre el libro. Fue detenido por el departamento Antimagia de la policía (sic) de su país (Arabia Saudí) porque se decía que en HWJN se hablaba sobre magia negra. Tuvo que demostrar a la policía que en el libro no aparecía una sola frase en contra del Corán y así pudo salir con bien del trance, incluso con una carta de alabanza y recomendación del libro, que vendió 15000 copias en un país donde la media de lectura es de “una página por persona al año” (sic).
Centrándonos ya en la obra propiamente dicha, se trata de una novela juvenil con bastante tópicos, lo cual resulta chocante viniendo de donde viene. La historia de amor entre una mujer y jinn que triplica su edad a pesar de ser muy joven para su raza y los impedimentos con los que se encuentran para poder vivir su amor son la base de cualquier romance paranormal que se precie.
Las peripecias por las que pasan los protagonistas y la forma de sortear los obstáculos gracias a Alá tampoco son muy originales, pero la historia se salva con esos toques orientales que la diferencian de las demás. También resulta interesante la categorización que ofrece de los jinns y algunas explicaciones sobre la lengua árabe de la que yo soy una total desconocedora.
Mi problema principal con la novela es el marcado tono paternalista con el que se refieren a las mujeres en general. Las mujeres, a pesar de tener virtudes, necesitan la guía masculina para poder culminar sus vidas, generalmente casándose con sus primos. Los autores no dejan pasar oportunidad para igualar a mujeres adultas con niñas que necesitan a su padre o a su marido para saber qué hacer, que lloran ante la adversidad o que pueden ser manipuladas para creer lo que es correcto. Es por esta razón que no puedo sugerir que se lea HWJN, aunque estoy de acuerdo con el trabajo realizado por los autores para llevar la ciencia ficción y la fantasía al mundo árabe.
