Shower of stones
Ha pasado bastante tiempo desde que leí No Return, la primera novela de Zachary Jernigan, pero el recuerdo que guardaba era bastante bueno.
En esta conclusión de la historia, volvemos a ver Churls, a Vedas, al mecánico Berun… en su enfrentamiento contra el dios Adrash.
Pero en realidad la intrahistoria es otra, porque Jernigan nos muestra la lucha por la autodeterminación, por el libre albedrío.
Aunque relacionada inextricablemente con No Return, Shower of stones es tan diferente como pueda serlo una novela que comparte personajes, donde antes había un objetivo ahora lo que predomina es una lucha interior. En vez de un viaje estamos ante un enfrentamiento filosófico.
Los temas que estaban muy presentes en la narración anterior, como el sexo y la violencia, también están aquí, aunque atenuados.
Para mí ha sido una decepción por una parte, porque realmente esperaba otra cosa. Pero hay que concederle al autor la valentía de arriesgarse para contar su historia. Quizá yo no era su público objetivo, ¿tal vez lo seas tú?

Century Rain
Si consigo seguir este ritmo, pronto acabaré con las novelas de Alastair Reynolds, y en ese momento el universo será un poco más gris porque no tendré sentido de la maravilla a raudales a la vuelta de la siguiente página (por lo menos de este autor, menos mal que me quedan todos los demás).
Pero mientras llega ese momento, seguiré encontrándome con obras tan interesantes como este Century Rain y el esfuerzo merecerá la pena.
El comienzo del libro alterna capítulos sin conexión aparente entre ellos. Por un lado, un investigador privado músico al que le encargan investigar un posible asesinato en un París “alternativo”. Por otro lado, una investigación arqueológica en el futuro también en París, llevada a cabo por uan civilización avanzada. A pesar de ser dos historias tan dispares, llegará un momento en el que se unan.
Las novelas de detectives y la ciencia ficción se mezclan bastante bien, ya sea incorporando algunos elementos de ciencia o un escenario futurista a una investigación, ya sea haciendo la propia ciencia ficción el eje sobre el que gira la novela. Me gusta más este enfoque que, afortunadamente, es el que utiliza Reynolds en este Century Rain.
La especulación científica es de alto nivel, estando presentes ciertos ticks del galés (esta obsesión suya con las máquinas autorreplicantes es para hacérsela mirar). A su vez la parte de investigación criminal está bastante bien llevada.
A mi modo de ver, el único problema que le veo al libro es el uso y abuso del diálogo explicando cada pequeño detalle. Hay ocasiones en que algunas de las conversaciones se convierten en pequeñas clases magistrales de los protagonistas, algo que se me hizo árido en algunos puntos de la lectura. No obstante, las escenas de acción están bastante bien llevadas y consiguen animar la lectura, en un constante “¿y qué va a pasar ahora?” que te hace seguir devorando página tras página.
Si te gusta el estilo de Alastair Reynolds no me cabe duda de que te va a encantar esta novela. Si no conoces al autor, te recomendaría que empezaras por otras novelas suyas como Espacio Revelación, para luego ir descubriendo las pequeñas maravillas que nos tiene reservadas Reynolds.

C.J. Cherryh nombrada Gran Maestra de la Ciencia Ficción
Ya es oficial. C.J. Cherryh, la renombrada escritora de Cyteen y Downbelow Station ha sido nombrada Gran Maestra de la Ciencia Ficción por la SFWA.
Sus primeras declaraciones fueron:
“I never expected this. I’m honored to join the ranks of so many illustrious writers. I have a lot of books left to write, a lot of books I want to write, stories I want to tell. Aquí os traigo la portada y la sinopsis de la nueva novela de Chuck Wendig, que está alcanzado niveles “sandersonianos” de publicación. Parece un thriller, al estilo de Zer0es, aunque la información es escasa.
Hannah Stander is a consultant for the FBI—a futurist who helps the Agency with cases that feature demonstrations of bleeding-edge technology. It’s her job to help them identify unforeseen threats: hackers, AIs, genetic modification, anything that in the wrong hands could harm the homeland.
Hannah is in an airport, waiting to board a flight home to see her family, when she receives a call from Agent Hollis Copper. “I’ve got a cabin full of over a thousand dead bodies,” he tells her. Whether those bodies are all human, he doesn’t say.
What Hannah finds is a horrifying murder that points to the impossible—someone weaponizing the natural world in a most unnatural way. Discovering who—and why—will take her on a terrifying chase from the Arizona deserts to the secret island laboratory of a billionaire inventor/philanthropist.
