Down and out in purgatory

purgatoryLos seguidores del blog sabréis que suelo disfrutar mucho leyendo las obras de Tim Powers. Sin embargo, no es menos cierto que a veces el autor de Buffalo también nos ofrece obras menores, no exentas de interés, pero que no llegan al nivel de otras. Esto, unido al hecho de que la narrativa breve que estoy leyendo últimamente es sencillamente espectacular (basten unos ejemplos) ha jugado en contra de Down and out of purgartory.

Y eso que la premisa de la que parte la historia se ajusta a los esquemas y giros habituales del autor. Fantasmas, ouijas, comunicaciones con el más allá… Está todo presente, aderezado con algo de poesía.

El problema es que ni la narración es interesante ni las descripciones son vívidas. El purgatorio particular al que se encamina el protagonista al menos es original, pero es pálido y sin gracia. ¿Existen varios purgatorios? ¿Por qué entonces todos los personajes importantes acaban en el mismo?

Por otra parte, el relato entra directamente en conflicto con la noción cristiana de purgatorio, Donde quizá esperábamos una historia de redención nos encontramos con una venganza que acaba resultando bastante pueril, con unos métodos bastante extremos para conseguir un fin exiguo.

Me cuesta trabajo encontrar puntos positivos de Down and out of purgartory aunque se puede decir que tiene ciertos toques surrealistas que pueden ser del interés de algún lector ocasional.

Al menos es de agradecer que se acaba rápido.

Juego de mesa Mistborn : House War

Brandon Sanderson sigue añadiendo niveles a su universo Mistborn. Esta vez no anuncia una nueva novela, pero se descuelga con un juego de mesa, algo que hará las delicias de muchos fans (haría las mías si tuviera tiempo para jugar).

Se va a lanzar una campaña Kickstarter para financiar el juego, pero aquí os pongo la información que la compañía encargada ha ofrecido como adelanto.

House of Suns

House_of_Suns_(Amazon)En un movimiento totalmente desestructurado, varios lectores en los que confío (sí, os estoy mirando a vosotros @dgonzalod y @mertonio) cantaron las alabanzas de House of suns.

Y entonces me di cuenta, con gran sorpresa, que a pesar de tener la edición en español de LFI no lo había leído. ¿Cómo era posible tamaño error? Mi salto al digital había dejado algunas cosas importantes por el camino, así que me decidí a subsanar esta laguna.

House of suns tiene todos los elementos que caracterizan la obra de Reynolds, en grado superlativo. Una aventura en una escala temporal tan enorme que resulta de difícil comprensión para nuestros pobres y limitados cerebros humanos. Rigor científico no reñido con la diversión. Unas gotas de terror gótico para aderezar la mezcla y ¡tachán! nos encontramos ante una SPACE OPERA con mayúsculas.

La estructura de la novela narra dos historias separadas enormemente en el tiempo y el espacio, pero aún así relacionadas. La introducción de cada parte es la historia de  la infancia y juventud de Abigail Gentian, origen de la Gentian Line. El resto de la novela versa sobre la vida de los miembros de la propia Gentian Line. Seis millones de años separan ambas líneas temporales y sin embargo, los instintos propios de la humanidad siguen presentes. Esta capacidad de resiliencia de los humanos, de adaptarse a lo que venga para continuar existiendo es un constante a lo largo de la obra del galés.

Me gusta como Reynolds consigue ir introduciendo durante la lectura conceptos que quizá no parezcan importantes cuando los lees por primera vez (la desaparición de la Galaxia Andrómeda, el Espíritu del Aire…) pero que juegan un papel fundamental en la parte final de la novela.

El principal fallo que le veo al libro es la descripción de los personajes, que en ocasiones parecen totalmente intercambiables. ¿Es un efecto buscado por el origen de la Gentian Line? Sería lógico suponer que no, pues es el tiempo transcurrido las diferencias deberían ser fundamentales, pero esto no se refleja ni en los diálogos y ni en la propia caracterización de los personajes. No obstante, ha sido mientras reflexionaba para esta reseña cuando este defecto ha resultado más evidente. El ritmo y la intriga de la lectura hicieron que pasara por alto este aspecto.

¿Y qué decir de la tecnología? Crear esferas de Dyson para proteger civilizaciones enteras de la explosión de una supernova parece un juego de niños para la Gentian Line y aún así este milagro de la ingeniería es poco más que jugar con bloques de Lego para otras inteligencias presentes en la galaxia. Es difícil hacerse una idea de la escala de las construcciones de este libro, incluso la tan manida unidad de medida “campos-de-fútbol” se queda extremadamente corta.

Aunque personalmente prefiero Pushing Ice, no dudaría en situar House of Suns entre las mejores obras de Reynolds y eso es mucho decir. No cometas mi mismo error y ponte ahora mismo a leerla.

Nominados Hugo 2016

Acompañados de nuevo de polémica, aquí os traigo los nominados a los premios Hugo de este año. Os sugiero leer la reflexión que hacen en Sense of Wonder respecto a los puppies. Yo constato que estos premios han perdido el interés para mí, ya que en vez de tratarse de una fiesta del género se han convertido en una burla, en una manipulación que no sé si tendrá arreglo. De hecho, ya no sé si las obras que han conseguido ser nominados forman parte de un movimiento estructurado por una u otra facción y no me apetece investigar sobre ello.
