Charlie Jane Anders gana el premio Crawford 2017

La ganadora del premio Crawford a la mejor primera novela de ciencia ficción o fantasía de este año ha sido All the Birds in the Sky de Charlie Jane Anders.

El premio lo concede la International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA) y uno de los miembros del jurado destacó de la obra:

“humor, the light touch, the swiftness with which the narrative unspools.”

Brother’s Ruin

Esta novella situada en el periodo de la Regencia en una Inglaterra donde la magia es posible resulta ser una excelente puerta de entrada al comienzo de una nueva serie y a la obra de Emma Newman.

El editor ubica esta historia dentro de algo denominado gaslamp fantasy (si, yo también tuve que buscarlo en la Wikipedia) pero si os digo que la ambientación recuerda a Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell todo quedará más claro. Con este encuadre lo primero que salta a la vista es que no es excesivamente original, pero es que no le hace falta. Lo que hace lo hace muy bien.

La historia se centra en las andanzas de Charlotte Gunn, una joven de una familia de clase media que es más de lo que aparenta ser. Aúna una carrera secreta como ilustradora de libros bajo pseudónimo masculino con un secreto todavía más peligroso: su capacidad mágica.

Y es que en este mundo inventado por Newman, cualquier persona que pueda realizar magia ha de entrar inmediatamente al servicio del Estado, antes de que pierda el control sobre sus poderes. Familia, trabajo… todo queda atrás.

Respecto a la ambientación las clases de magia posibles están bien planteadas y en general me gusta el tono amable en el que se desarrollan los acontecimientos que no son para nada agradables. Me resulta un poco repetitiva la obsesión de la protagonista por los rizos masculinos y la tendencia de los dedos de sus pies a tener vida propia en presencia de otro de los personajes, pero entiendo que es una forma de reflejar la ingenuidad de la época.

También me gusta el ligero (ligerísimo) tono reivindicativo que tiene Charlotte, en conflicto porque quiere llevar las riendas de su propia vida y a la vez ajustarse a los estándares sociales de la época (algo a todas luces imposible).

En resumen, Brother’s Ruin resulta una lectura agradable y que deja planteado un universo muy interesante en el que desarrollar nuevas historias.

Low Town

El twitter de Joe Abercrombie es @LordGrimdark y no creo que haya muchos capaces de discutirle el título, pero sin duda uno de los más capacitados para ese puesto sería Daniel Polansky.

Había conocido a este autor con la estupenda The Builders y también con A City Dreaming. El bajo precio de este libro me decidió a comprarlo y darle una oportunidad.

El ambiente que crea el autor es opresivo. La novela se desarrolla en los bajos fondos de una ciudad y es tal el nivel de podredumbre y corrupción que alcanza con alguna de las descripciones que el malestar se convierte en una sensación física.

El tono es decididamente oscuro. Comenzar un libro con el secuestro y asesinato de un niño parece haberse convertido en una costumbre en mis lecturas, pero no por ello deja de ser impactante. El protagonista es decididamente un antihéroe, un narcotraficante con un pasado en el ejército y en la policía (muy útil tener un personaje comodín que hace de todo) que se decide a investigar este asesinato ante la pasividad de las fuerzas vivas de la ciudad.

Los personajes son realistas y ninguno se salva de las sombras. Todos tienen sus intereses personales que anteponen a los de los demás y no dudan en utilizar todo sus recursos para llevarse el gato al agua.

Aunque la ambientación está muy conseguida y los personajes son singulares, la trama no lo es tanto. Es bastante obvia la conclusión a la que llega el libro, que cualquier lector más o menos avezado habría adivinado con cierta antelación.  La resolución es bastante lineal, solo hay un sospechoso posible y la investigación siempre está enfocada en esa dirección. El sistema de magia también es un poco accesorio, estamos muy mal acostumbrados por Sanderson, que imbuye de sentido a un arte que de por sí es misterioso.

Existen dos versiones del mismo libro. Yo lo compré como Low Town, pero en la página web del autor tiene otro nombre, The Straight Razor Cure.

Low Town está publicado en español como Bajos Fondos traducido por Miguel Antón.
