The Woman at the Tower Window.

I have adored Rachel Swirsky’s smart, savvy, and powerful stories since I stumbled across her novelette, “Eros, Philia, Agape”. It was a beautiful piece of fiction, and she only seemed to grow as storyteller over the following years. Probably my very favourite story of hers is the magnificent novella The Lady Who Plucked Red Flowers beneath the Queen’s Window, which won the Nebula Award and was nominated for the Hugo and World Fantasy Awards. When I first started acquiring new novellas for Tor.com Publishing, Rachel’s name was at the very top of the list of people I wanted to work with, so I’m beyond delighted that we’ll be publishing The Woman at the Tower Window. I think it’s going to be incredible and from what I’ve already seen, I think Tor.com’s readers will too.

‘Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living amongst these last humans, longs to be a pilot and join the fight. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible …assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, it appears, has a soul.’

Subterranean publicará The Tea Master and the Detective

It’s, Xuya meets Sherlock Holmes, if Holmes were an eccentric scholar & Watson a grumpy decommissioned war mindship

Welcome to the Scattered Pearls Belt, a collection of ring habitats and orbitals ruled by exiled human scholars and powerful families, and held together by living mindships who carry people and freight between the stars. In this fluid society, human and mindship avatars mingle in corridors and in function rooms, and physical and virtual realities overlap, the appareance of environments easily modified and adapted to interlocutors or current mood.

A transport ship discharged from military service after a traumatic injury, The Shadow’s Child now ekes out a precarious living as a brewer of mind-altering drugs for the comfort of space-travellers. Meanwhile, abrasive and eccentric scholar Long Chau wants to find a corpse for a scientific study. When Long Chau walks into her office, The Shadow’s Child expects an unpleasant but easy assignment. When the corpse turns out to have been murdered, Long Chau feels compelled to investigate, dragging The Shadow’s Child with her.

As they dig deep into the victim’s past, The Shadow’s Child realises that the investigation points to Long Chau’s own murky past–and, ultimately, to the dark and unbearable void that lies between the stars…

Portada de The Tattered Prince and the Demon Veiled

The Tattered Prince and the Demon Veiled. Es obra de René Aigner.

Aquí os traigo la descripción:

Brama was once a thief who dreamed of riches. Now he’s the Torn Man, a broken soul who could have all the riches he wants, except he no longer yearns for it. He’s chosen instead to live in the poorest quarter of Sharakhai with the very creature who tortured him mercilessly, a powerful ehrekh known as Rümayesh.

Brama’s life changes forever when he stumbles across a woman named Jax, an intriguing young foreigner fleeing assassins from her homeland. Brama has feared to use Rümayesh’s power, but asks her now to help save Jax from her fate. Rümayesh, who seems curiously fascinated by Jax, agrees.

Brama has little time to wonder over Rümayesh’s sudden and unexpected interest, for his fate soon becomes entangled with Jax’s. As a drug lord learns of Brama’s sapphire, and the assassins close in, Brama fights to save Jax, preventing him from focusing on what may be the biggest threat of all: Rümayesh herself.

Portada de Wrath of Empire

The country is in turmoil. With the capital city occupied, half a million refugees are on the march, looking for safety on the frontier, accompanied by Lady Flint’s soldiers. But escaping war is never easy, and soon the battle may find them, whether they are prepared or not.

Back in the capital, Michel Bravis smuggles even more refugees out of the city. But internal forces are working against him. With enemies on all sides, Michael may be forced to find help with the very occupiers he’s trying to undermine.

Meanwhile, Ben Styke is building his own army. He and his mad lancers are gathering every able body they can find and searching for an ancient artifact that may have the power to turn the tides of war in their favor. But what they find may not be what they’re looking for.

Libros gratis : Double Star y Soulmates

Double Star

Many of Heinlein’s fans consider the novels he wrote in the fifties amongst the author’s strongest work; when he was at the peak of his talents. Double Star is considered by many to be the finest of his titles. Brian Aldiss called it his “most enjoyable novel.”

Whether it is the simplicity of a lively tale, the complexity of the situation, or the depth of characterization, the book has developed a loyal following. It also won Heinlein his first Hugo.

The story revolves around Lawrence Smith—also known as “Lorenzo the Great”—a down-and-out actor wasting the remainder of his life in bars.

When he encounters a space-pilot who offers him a drink, before he knows what is going on, he is on Mars involved in a deep conspiracy with global consequences. He is given a mission where failure would not only mean his own death, it would almost certainly mean an all-out planetary war.

“Heinlein’s novels of the 1940s and 50s shaped every single science fiction writer of my generation and everyone currently writing science fiction. Or making science fiction movies … and Double Star is an excellent example of all the reasons why.”—Connie Willis

Soulmates

“This book will be remembered as one of the major collections of the decade.”Robert J. Sawyer

“…a satisfying sampler of solid stories from a team that rarely disappoints.”Publishers Weekly

Multiple award-winning authors, Mike Resnick and Lezli Robyn, get to the heart of the matter in Soulmates, which showcases all the words they have penned together over their years as collaborators (with a bonus solo piece by each). Whether a robot, alien, some kind of supernatural being or human, rising above our prejudices and ignorance allows us to make emotional connections that can have a profound effect on our lives.

Each of these stories examine a facet of the simple, yet incredibly complex, concept of companionship. They will make you laugh; will make you cry…but most importantly they will make you look at the very basic notion of soul-mates in a different light.

“Standouts include…Mike Resnick and Lezli Robyn’s beautifully sad “Benchwarmer,” which takes us into the world of imaginary friends, and introduces us to one friend who simply can’t let go of the boy who created him.”io9

“That’s [Soulmates] the second story that will be considered by me for next year’s Hugos; this one in the Novelette category.”SFRevu

“In a classic example of cognitive estrangement, we learn the absurdity of our own cultural norms as seen by those on the outside…effectively played to humorous effect.” (on :”Report from the Field”)SFSignal
