In a world not quite our own, every living thing is born into one of six\u00a0discrete\u00a0\u201cfractions\u201d that are incompatible with\u2014and often invisible to\u2014each other.\u00a0\u00a0These fractions have coexisted peacefully for centuries, but now a disease has appeared that seems to drag the infected parts of the body into a different fraction.\u00a0\u00a0The effects are devastating.
